Is there a need for leadership development?
What would it be like for you if you couldn't call on your pastor in a crisis? If you couldn't expect to hear a sermon from a trained Bible teacher every Sunday? If you didn't know when you could have the Lord's Supper because you didn't know when your pastor would be at your church? North Americans wouldn't sit still for that kind of treatment. However, the absence of a trained pastor is the norm rather than the exception in Kenya.
One experienced Kenyan pastor describes the current situation this way: "...the number of churches pastors are responsible for varies from DCC [District Church Council] to DCC. Naivasha DCC for instance had an average of 3 churches per pastor. During my time there as pastor, the most churches I had to take care of any given time was 4 and that for just a brief time. I mostly had 2 churches plus the responsibility as the DCC administrative secretary. Having said that I know there are a few places where the situation is slightly better than Naivasha and a whole lot of other DCC's where the situation is worse, comparatively. My guess is on the average you would have pastors taking care of between 5-7 churches" (Pastor Laban Njoroge).
The sacrifices these men make for the Lord Jesus and their pastoral ministry are a large part of what motivates Kevin to help provide them with an academic foundation and tangible assistance through bringing in short term mission teams to work alongside Moffat alumni. In so doing, Kevin will fulfill God's call to help develop Kenyan pastors and Christian workers through Moffat College of Bible, and increase the number of trained pastors for Kenyan churches. Linda will also work informally with the students' wives preparing them for their work.
